| Sean
O’Laoire, speaking at a major conference
on the Belfast Dublin Economic Corridor, outlined a vision of a thriving
metropolis of Newry and Dundalk achievable over 20 years. His paper, titled ‘Towards
a Mini Metropolitan Cluster Plan for Newry - Dundalk’, was part of
the Dublin Belfast Corridor 2025 Conference’ held at the Canal Court
Hotel Newry Co. Down on 11 & 12 September 2003. Using examples from Europe and Australia, Mr. O’Laoire said the mini-metropolis concept didn’t necessarily mean a physical convergence of Newry and Dundalk, but rather involved better infrastructure and links. His paper outlined how the location of the two towns meant they were ideally placed to enjoy mutual benefits. "there are precedents which have been supported by the EU’s Interreg programme- the Vienna Bratislava corridor in one example consistent with European spatial planning" In an interview with Irish News, Sean O’Laoire’s ‘mini-metropolis’ was described by Fergal McCormack, Managing Partner FPM Chartered Accountants; immediate past President, Institute of Chartered Accountants; as ‘a fascinating vision, backed up in a historical context and with benchmarks to world-wide examples… we certainly need to take the concept further" This two-day event was designed to foster debate and to focus on the issues around the future development of Ireland’s main economic corridor. The Conference was chaired by Professor Bill Morrison, University of Ulster, formerly Chief Architect and Planning Officer, Belfast and organised by the Urban Institute of Ireland. It attracted business people, planners and academics from all over Ireland. |
