In
a recent Irish Independent feature from 27th May on the topic of
improving the city as a place to live a number
of prominent citizens of Dublin
were asked what they would do with the city if they could wave a magic
wand.
Sean O’Laoire of MOLA suggested that the city should have
an elected mayor who would offer
"
a vision of the city involving an integrated planning system" He would
also ensure there was citizen’s charter, place urban studies on the
curriculum to encourage participation in the city and a better contribution
to society. He also proposed twinning affluent suburbs with areas at the
opposite end of the social spectrum to encourage better understanding of
city life.
He would fund a construction prototype of a medium density suburb
of 1,000 people this would be an experiment on how to live in a city in
a real way.
Finally, he suggested that all public representatives should
take diplomas in urban planning and design and should report back to citizens
on what they had learned and how they would put it into practice.
