MÓLA was awarded in the Tourism Category at the Cork Better Buildings Awards for the final phases of refurbishment of the Cork Opera House. The award was presented by Mr Tom Spalding of An Taisce/Cork City Heritage Forum at a gala breakfast awards ceremony on Friday November 13th, 2009 at the Gresham Metropole Hotel, Cork.
Cork Better Buildings Awards is a Cork Marketing Partnership initiative:
"aimed at raising awareness of, and applauding the effort that goes into, the good design, maintenance, conservation and presentation of Cork Buildings".
The works were carried out during the Opera House’s tight closure periods during the summers of 2008 and 2009, and comprised the upgrading of all health and safety systems throughout the building; the renovation of the auditorium; new house lighting and an extensive address to all wall finishes to improve the space acoustics. The works also included the re-tiering of the floors to dramatically improve sightlines to the stage from all areas of the auditorium and provide improved wheelchair accessibility.
Upon completion of the works in 2009 President Mary McAleese officiated at the Gala re-opening of the Cork Opera House, and paid tribute to those involved the refurbishment of the Opera House:
“From its foundation the Opera House... has been a terrific showcase of the very best of local and international talent and now the Opera House itself is a showcase of the craftsmanship and care of this generation which took its refurbishment in hand and did such a spectacularly good job.”
