The Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore and the Community Nursing Home Unit, St. Mary’s Hospital Grounds in the Phoenix Park, both designed by Murray Ó Laoire/O'Connell Mahon (formerly Murray Ó Laoire/Brian O’Connell Associates) were finalists in the International Academy for Design and Health Awards this July.
The awards, announced at the 6th Design & Health World Congress which took place in Singapore, recognise and reward the achievements of design and health professionals in the successful delivery of leading edge research and innovative health-centric projects and buildings.
The Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore involved the complex integration of a 30,000 sq.m. new-build three-four storey insitu concrete structure and the phased restoration and conversion of the existing 1940’s hospital building into a corporate centre for health administration. Set in a landscaped campus, it is conceived as an urban entity expanding and consolidating the development of the town and reflecting the regional importance of the service it provides.
The Community Nursing Home Unit is a 100-bed ‘turn key’ high quality community nursing home located in a walled garden to the rear of St. Mary’s Hospital in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. The unit provides a range of services for elderly people and support for their carers in its catchment area including respite / intermittent care, day care and extended nursing support.
The International Academy for Design and Health (IADH) is a non-profit organisation with an inter-disciplinary network dedicated to stimulate research and the application of research concerning the interaction between Design, Health and Culture.
The IADH was founded by scientists at the Karolinska Institute, Medical University, in Stockholm in 1997, to provide a highly visible international forum for promoting an ongoing global exchange of research findings among scientists, designers, and industry.
