Murray Ó Laoire/O'Connell Mahon (formerly Murray Ó Laoire/Brian O’Connell Associates) was commissioned by Bon Secours Health System in June 2005 to develop a master plan/development control plan for each hospital within the Bon Secours Group.
At Bon Secours Hospital College Road, Cork, phase one of the resulting development plan proposes a significant extension to the north of the existing hospital. The future hospital expansion is to be set into the sloped landscape overlooking the River Lee, accommodating pathology wards; oncology; radiotherapy; PET CT; operating theatres and six level car park.
A hospital street, linking the existing entrance block to a proposed new-build north foyer, will form a defined circulation spine with views of the historic convent, convent garden and river corridor. A landscaping scheme forms an integral part of the scheme addressing the amenity/landscape zoning to the north and a proposed riverside walk.
The proposal, which would see the existing campus increase its clinical space by approximately 50%, was granted planning permission in April 2009. The construction cost of the project is approximately €50 million.
