A small piece of music history was made on July 6, 2006 when the first notes were played by various heads of departments in the new (well, under construction) Cork School of Music building.
MOLA set up two large sample tuition rooms on the first floor, with working models of the acoustic panels and basic features including; acoustically isolated walls ceiling and floor, acoustic windows and doors, lighting, carpet, chilled beams etc. A Steinway Grand Piano was brought in for an acoustic test and the builders (John Sisk & Sons) spent the day tacking the acoustic panels up in various positions and quantities. Amazing variance in sound quality - the musicians fine tuned the room until they were satisfied.
The Cork School of Music will be the first purpose built building of its kind in Ireland, consisting of specialist tuition areas, rehearsal hall, live recording studio, drama suite and lecture rooms. The school was the first educational PPP project undertaken by the Irish Government. It will initially accommodate 400 full time students and 2000 part time students
The builders were very relieved to see the Steinway Grand Piano leave a very busy six storey construction site in one piece!!
